The Tools of The Trade

by Loran Hey there! My name is Sophie/Loran, whichever you prefer. I’ve been a Gundam fan since Gundam Wing first aired on Toonami, and have been building Gunpla since September 2000. I’ve effectively been a fan for half my life now. My favorite series is Turn A Gundam (obviously!), and I primarily build 1/144 scale [...]

Zombies, Robots and Barbarians

melissa | February 24, 2010

By Unkiedev Some fairly decent stuff this week. Let’s hope the snows of Baltimore do not destroy, delay and other wise defray our comic books from getting from Diamond to our hot little hands. BOOKS SUCH AS Dark Horse’s new title: Devil #1 (Looks like a super great anime/vampire mash up), DC’s Batman #696, and [...]

What’s Your Level of Commitment?

lindsay | February 22, 2010

So I guess introducing myself would be the best way to start this thing huh? Very well then, my name is Chris and this is the first entry on the Forbidden Planet Gundam-focus model kit (or Gunpla if you’re that hardcore) blog. Over the next couple of weeks, myself and my team of Gunpla fanatics (Loran and Monty, who you’ll be introduced to shortly), will be building kits. sharing our progress with the readers of this site, and hopefully drum up some interest in FP’s revamped Gundam section, which we all worked on to improve and meet the fan’s needs and desires. Some of you may already know Monty and Loran from 2009′s New York Anime Festival’s Model Kit panel, and I’m thrilled to have them sharing their kit building expertise. I can honestly say I’m definitely not as good as either of them in this hobby, but I’m good enough to help any potential newbies out there curious to start building kits of their own. Aside from our online tutorials, you can (hopefully, lol) expect some video, general Gundam news and product reviews, submissions of kits done by the model kit community (feel free to submit your kit pics and descriptions to nygunplayblog@gmail.com) and hell, maybe we’ll toss some Gundam related-cosplay pics up here as well every so often.

Wonder Woman: Who, What, Why?

shervin | February 22, 2010

Comic books used to be about a variety of subjects, ranging from romance to real crime, from cowboys to caped crusaders. Now, outside of struggling independent comic books that are either ready-made screenplays for Hollywood exploitation or pornography (you know, the good stuff!) comic books are dominated by one subject and one audience: Super heroes for 30 year-olds.

Of Monkeys and Masters

By Unkiedev The end of a millennium is always an opportunity to look backwards in nostalgia, but it seems when we crossed over from the Twentieth to the Twenty-First centuries we never stopped looking back. This is a nice way of saying that, while individual comics can still be a hoot, on the whole the [...]

Mega Nihei Strike!

melissa | February 17, 2010

By Mat K. Anyone out there read the series “Blame”? Or subsequently, “Noise”? Of course you have, that was rhetorical. They’re only the best dark future cyber-punk series to come out since Ghost in The Shell. Does anyone else remember a Marvel Comics mini-series called “Wolverine: Snikt!“? In case you never got around to reading [...]

Green Lantern… is Yellow!

shervin | February 12, 2010

Holy Rainbows, Batman! In the past few years a complete spectrum of multi-hued warriors has joined DC Comics the Green Lantern for combat and tea in the outer reaches of space! KERPLOWIE!

Vampires in Comic Books

melissa | February 11, 2010

Depending on your point of view this could be the golden age of vampires in popular culture OR, as many “old school” horror fans feel, a time of a great and calamitous darkness. They feel like the elf queen Galadriel in the Lord of the Rings, that the once fun and fertile world of vampires as sexy, horrible undead monsters is slowly dying, transforming into a new age of emotional vampires with guilt and girlfriends, fueled less by hatred and more by teen angst. “I can feel it in the water,” they cry. “ I can feel it in the air.”

Week Of Awesome: Naruto, Pokemon Adventures and more!

shervin | February 8, 2010

Why is this week so awesome? Well, it is the first week of February and Viz has decided its time once again to avalanche us with titles. And I mean that in a good way. First and foremost, Naruto Volume 47 is here, and you know you fans have been fiending for it. Pain is attacking Konoha and they’ve taken heavy damages. The toads are doing the best they can but it won’t be enough. Even Toad Sage Naruto can’t handle all the death and destruction, and no one can tell if it’s for better or worse when one more death causes him to sprout 8 out of his 9 demon tails.

On the Run With New Comics

shervin | February 2, 2010

Because SOMEONE felt they needed the $10,000 reward money for turning me in to the Feds more than they needed a column this week, I, your humble comic book writer is on the freakin’ lamb. AGAIN. This happens every time; I put a down payment on a nice, one room abandoned shack in the middle of the woods away from the spy satellites and brain reading microwaves and THEN they find me and I have to pack up my collection of tin-foil hats and jars of my urine and escape into the night.
